Today on the blog we have a very interesting profile. As you all know, on my trip to Sydney last October, I visited and enjoyed the services of the very handsome and very humble Richard aka The Naked Barber. A few of you were very curious as to the whole experience and how he got into it.

(2CW) Shalom Richard and welcome to 2 Cents. Thank you so much for agreeing to do this.

(TNB) That's okay, thank you for asking me.

(2CW) Firstly, before we get into the Naked Barber stuff, did you have a background in grooming / hairstyling before? Can you tell us about what you did pre-Naked?

(TNB) I was 15 when I left school to do my 4 year hairdressing apprenticeship. After I that I moved to Brisbane where I worked as a senior stylist for about a year, when I quit my job because of sexual harassment from my boss. The funny thing was, that I went from quitting a
job because of sexual harassment to working in a gay massage parlour. Where happy endings was part of the job prescription. As a young guy, I was making a lot of money and spending it all on god know what!!! After 6 months of rubbing and tugging I finally went back to hairdressing with nothing to show for it! Moving back to the Gold Coast when I was 21 and working in a salon that had a rent a chair system. Where I ended up pulling in a lot of client's as I was specialising in hair extensions at this time of my career and for the first time in my life "I Saved Money" and open up my own salon by the age of 23. I was way to young and really
wasn't over the party life yet! So after 2 and 1/2 years of working, partying and more partying. I finally just broke down and lost my salon because of it... I ended up moving to a large country town called Wagga Wagga. This is where I started getting into men's grooming. As I was working in a barber shop in the middle of the town and the owner also had small salon at the RAAF Base, where I worked 2 days a week... There waxing was a huge thing with a lot of the men at the RAAF Base.

The following year I moved to Sydney, where I got a job working in an up market salon. I was back doing women's hair and I found myself wanting to spread my wings and move to London to see if I could make something of myself over there (as I was only getting older)and you can't get a working permit after the age of 30. Arrived in London at the age of 29 and worked in a funky salon in Camden Town. As much as I loved London I really could not stand the weather and didn't want to stay another Winter! So after 18 month, It was time to come home for an Australian Summer! when I arrived home I got a job managing a barber shop in North Sydney. After doing 16 months there, I ended up leaving to do what I do now!

(2CW) Did you enjoy the 9-5 hairdressing?

(TNB) No, not at all... That was one big plus about starting my own business.

(2CW) Have you always been a nudist?

(TNB) As a kid, I never seemed to care much about nudity. Even as a teenager I had a group of friends that would get drunk naked! I don't mean get drunk then get naked, but the other way. we would strip off and then drink... I think, we thought we would get drunk a lot quicker if we were naked or something like that! LOL

(2CW) How did you come up with the idea of combining nudity and grooming?
Also, whilst on the subject, can you define FETISH GROOMING for us all please?

(TNB) The idea come after a few wines at dinner party with my room mate I had at that time. It was such a great Idea, I just could not let it go!

Fetish Grooming is a service that is provided for people that have a grooming fetish - An act where one persons sexual fantasy is played out, in a submissive role, whilst being "groomed" by a dominant man or Master. Many men are turned on by their barber experience. From the shaving cream to the hot towel, being caped up and having the barbers crotch rub by you as you are sitting in the chair having a haircut or even just liking the smell of the baby powder at the end...

All of this and more comes into play with The Naked Barber experience!

(2CW) Describe the set up of your studio.

(TNB) It's a fully equipped barber shop in an underground sand stone
studio, that I like to call The Naked Barber's Dungeon.

(2CW) Describe what happens in a basic visit. What happens from when the client walks in the door? Are you naked? Do they get naked? What happens?

(TNB) Not all of my clients want me naked, some want me in leather or sports gear and others may just want some good old fashion grooming done, with none of that kinky stuff added... But most ask me to be naked and they tend to get naked with me. I guess some of them have too, if they come in for body grooming services that is...

(2CW) Now it should be pointed out that your service is a GROOMING service - albeit a unique kind - but NOT a sexual service correct?

(TNB) It depends how you look at it! I don't have sex with my client, but It can still be a sexual experience of some kind "I guess". I do a lot of pubic grooming (Waxing and Shaving). With this service you find most guys are highly aroused and would get hard or even cum during the process.

(2CW) I have to be honest and say that from how welcomed and lovely you made me feel - you actually also made me feel.... well ........ sexy isn't the word ..... 'good' is closer but the right one eludes me. You really do have a wonderful sense of "I'll take care of you" that you transmit through your touch. It was a really wonderful and unique experience for me. PS I have to say that initially at least, it was a really sensual experience too. Without being grotty or explicitly gross.

(TNB) Hearing stuff like that is why I keep on doing it... Thank you!

(2CW) You host a weekly event at my FAVOURITE Sydney Pub "The Oxford Hotel" called 'Buzz'. What is that and how did it come about?

(TNB) When I first started The Naked Barber business, I was approached by a few night club promoters and started doing buzz cuts at clubs and dance parties. It was a lot of fun turning up in full leather chaps and harness to do buzz cuts for drunken or drugged out bunch of kids. All I kept on thinking was, wait till you wake up tomorrow and see what you have done. After working in the scene for about 6 months, I was seeing a gap in the gay scene for butch (masculine) gay men, who didn't want to go out to gay pub's that are playing Lady GaGa and Madonna songs or worse yet, seeing a drag queen trying to lip sinking to it! So I asked a DJ friend of mine, what he would think if I got him to play rock music as I do buzz cuts on stage in a gay pub. He loved the idea even more then I did and we took it to the Oxford Hotel and ended up grabbing a weekly gig there... After a year we are still going strong. Every Thursday night from 8pm.

(2CW) You have a partner I believe, how does he/she feel / deal with your line of work?

(TNB) He already knew who I was and what I did when I met him. He seems to be OK with it as a job. I think he finds the rest of it a bit hard to take. Like the self marketing part of the job!

(2CW) Now you knew that I just could not go past without asking about THE SLING. Why does a fetish groomer have a SLING that he uses in his grooming service please? Should I add "Sir" onto the end of that LOL....?

(TNB) Hehehe If it helps you to play out a scene in your head, then you can call me "Sir". As for the SLING, that is where I do all my scrotum and arse grooming. I find its an easy way to get in and deal with all those hair problems LOL..

Tent embassy antics a disaster for the indigenous cause

The image of the self-appointed spokesman for Aborigines, Paul Coe, holding Prime Minister Julia Gillard's shoe and calling for her to "show an act of good faith" and come to the Aboriginal tent embassy in Canberra and collect it - when exactly the opposite was required - reminded me of the last time I encountered Coe.

It was on the steps of a court. Coe had just been struck from the roll of barristers for professional misconduct.

The NSW Legal Services Tribunal found he had filed an affidavit, that was "substantially false, was known by him to be false and was sworn with the intention of deceiving the court ... the tribunal has not received from Mr Coe any acknowledgement that he recognises and regrets his wrongdoing ... "

Outside the court, Coe told reporters: "It confirms my view that it is still a white man's world."

I said to him: "You always cry racism when you get caught out."

Coe responded with an expletive and an obscene gesture.

A reporter from the ABC apologised to Coe for my remarks.

That was in was 1997. Six years later, in 2003, Coe was again investigated for professional misconduct, for accepting legal fees when he was not licensed to practice.

Now Coe, off the public radar for 15 years, has popped up with the Prime Minister's shoe and is grandstanding with it, even though the shoe was acquired during an act of collective hysteria, hate speech and menace.

The shoe should be returned to Gillard, with apologies, but that would require an act of moral courage. So it's not going to happen.

The mayhem when Gillard lost her shoe may have received abundant publicity, and created an image that went around the world, but it is a disaster for the credibility of the indigenous justice movement in Australia, which has been working with other leading Australians and politicians to put a referendum to voters to recognise indigenous people in the constitution.

Now a fringe has muscled into the media glare, pushing aside the constructive majority. This will stick in the public's mind.

The hysteria was driven by Michael Anderson, a co-founder of the Aboriginal tent embassy near Parliament House in Canberra 40 years ago, who whipped up a crowd of demonstrators about Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

This is what Abbott had said during an interview earlier in the day: "Look, I can understand why the tent embassy was established all those years ago. I think a lot has changed for the better since then. We had the historic apology just a few years ago, one of the genuine achievements of Kevin Rudd as prime minister. We had the proposal which is currently for national consideration to recognise indigenous people in the constitution. I think the indigenous people of Australia can be very proud of the respect in which they are held by every Australian and yes, I think a lot has changed since then and I think it probably is time to move on from that."

This is how Anderson characterised Abbott's remarks: "He said the Aboriginal embassy had to go, we heard it on a radio broadcast. We thought no way, so we circled around the building ... It's just madness on the part of Tony Abbott. What he said amounts to inciting racial riots."

The chasm between reality and hysteria is an embarrassment to Anderson.

The irony is that Abbott has spent weeks with indigenous communities searching for ways to end the cycle of failed government policies. He is particularly close to Aboriginal leader Noel Pearson.

A further irony is that indigenous affairs is one area where Gillard and Abbott have put aside their many differences.

It was notable that Gillard, when told her security could not be guaranteed as a gathering of protesters banged on the windows yesterday, made sure to inquire that Abbott, who was also at the ceremony she was attending, would also be looked after.

That has been widely noted, to her credit.

...........Now I have to be honest - I'm not a fan of our Prime Minister - but I am even less of a fan of this guy. And it highlights the issue of activists who harm their own cause. True progress NEVER results from sensational and sometimes violent actions similar to this. I am truly bemused but not surprised by this. Thankfully, we have SERIOUS Indigenous Representatives in this country working WITH our Parliament and State Governments to achieve positive outcomes. Unfortunately, this type of stoopid idiot has an appeal with the ignorant and those who simply want a fight for the fights' sake - with absolutely ZERO interest in the what that fight is actually about!!...

....The other thing here that I am ashamed off is the lack of respect for the Prime Minister. As far as I am concerned - you can dislike the PERSON - but that person is the elected leader of our country. The title of Prime Minister should bring a level of respect - irregardless of whether you the like person in the office or not...

....This was an embarrassing and shameful day for Australia....

........... This was one line from a conversation I was having with someone about my most recent poll.....

Am I obsessed with barebacking? Yes. Because I want to understand it. I also reaffirm that here on 2 Cents Worth Down Under, I will never write for or against barebacking. It is not my place to approve or disapprove of peoples' individual choices.

Before I get into it - the simple plain truth is that sex without a condom feels good. End of story. For tops it has enhanced sensation with no need to pause the passion to put a dom on. For the bottom, it is easier to take a cock due to lack of the issue of friction that even a well lubed rubber can produce. Not to mention those latext sensitivity/allergy. For those in relationships, it is described as the ultimate way to truly physically bond with a partner during sex.

.Now....Once upon a time in the 90's the resurgence of barebacking was a "push back" against a hardline culture of safe sex that was built on a foundation of shaming people who fucked sans condom. It was also somewhat rebellious in the fact that HIV took the "choice" out of whether to use protection or not and now imposed a measure of restriction that some people pushed back against. After the mass deaths of the 80's there was a quick and sharp response to the epidemic in Australia. Whilst the promotion of healthy and safer sex was comprehensive and very target group friendly, the response to those who admitted they barebacked was often harsh and disdainful. This was an approach, I believe, due in part to many educators and HIV health workers at the time who had suffered many losses. However, it was a tactic that ultimately failed.

In the early 2000's the psychology of barebacking shifted to a culture of the "gift givers" and "bug chasers". For me this was an alarming change of paradigm that I am still to fully understand. Whilst HIV treatments had certainly advanced by this time, they were still largely unsuccessful and the death rate was still significant.

Now in the 2010's barebacking has taken on an almost "extreme sport" culture. Just as in extreme sports where there is a significant risk of injury and death, it seems many view barebacking with a similar but morphed type of view. Given the permeation of the community with regards to HIV and STI information via the net, advertising campaigns and word of mouth/peer education, there are very few people who are truly ignorant of the risks. There is also a somewhat false view of the efficacy of treatments. Yes, treatments have advanced beyond what we initially ever hoped for back when I worked in sexual health between 91 & 95, but people are still dying. Non-compliance with treatment regimes. Uneven compliance. Genetic factors. Aggressive strains. These are all still killing people.

In 2009 (as supplied by the Mundi Index / Avert.org) there were 17,000 deaths in the USA, 1000 in Canada, 700 in Britain, and 100 in Australia. I reference these countries as they are countries with sophisticated and long term HIV health education programmes that have significant knowledge penetration into the community consciousness..... These are also countries where barebacking is now - depending on which source you speak to - the RULE not the EXCEPTION... Indeed, in my experience with sexual encounters, more often than not the bottom said I didn't 'have' to use protection if I didn't want to. I did, but was surprised at how few requested a condom. These were people from varied backgrounds, ages, professional and blue collar. Anecdotally, what does this tell us?

It says that at a fundamental, almost primal level, the safe sex message has failed. Why?, given that there are life threatening issues involved, how has this happened? What is it that has resulted in this behaviour becoming so wide-spread? Why have so many men, aware of the risks and consequences of HIV, chosen to engage in this behaviour?

The plain and simple truth is that there is no one answer... the answers - much like the virus itself - mutate and change faster than health education can keep up.

Hollywood actor apologises for saying if he were on board, he would have saved United Airlines flight 93 from crashing during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg has apologised for saying he would have stopped one of the planes hijacked on September 11, 2001, from crashing if he had been on board.

Wahlberg, 34, was reportedly due to fly on United Airlines flight 93 from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco but switched to a charter flight instead.

Flight 93 crashed into a Pennsylvania field after passengers wrestled with the terrorists who hijacked the plane. Other aircraft hijacked that morning crashed into the World Trade Centre towers in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia.

"If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn't have went down like it did," the actor and former underwear model told Men's Journal magazine, which published the interview in its February edition.

His comments were criticised by the widow of Thomas Burnett-Bailey, one of the passengers who challenged the hijackers.

"Does Mark Wahlberg have a pilot's licence? Then I think hindsight is 20/20 and it's insignificant to say what you would have done if you weren't there," Deena Burnett-Bailey told entertainment gossip website TMZ.

"The plan for Flight 93 was foiled by heroes. For him to speculate that his presence on board could have stopped everything is silly and disrespectful. Sounds like someone is grandstanding."

Mr Burnett-Bailey had called his wife while he was on the flight, telling her: "I know we're all going to die - there's three of us who are going to do something about it. ... I love you, honey."

Wahlberg later apologised, telling TMZ: "To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with.

"I deeply apologise to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive; it was certainly not my intention."

............so........... since Bubb and I officially separated, we have both been looking at how we could meet new people socially. So being two i-Gays we loaded up our portable mobile devices with Grindr, Scruff, and I even popped on Growlr and Mister......

..........Now (purely speaking for myself) I have had some very interesting and downright laugh out loud conversations with some really lovely people - ELEVEN THOUSAND KILOMETRES AWAY !!!!!!.......Yes - the most stimulating and interesting chats have been with men in the USA ..........Most notably Seattle, San Diego and Tuscon..... I seem to be very popular on the West Coast.......

.........Interestingly enough - the chats on the ground in my local area has been been rewarding but somewhat LIGHT in terms of frequency......... Through my wanderings in the dating / social meeting desert that is gayberspace - I have learnt a few things about my fellow wanderers and it eerily seems to mirror a simliar post by my good friend Brenton over at Aussielicious HERE..... I've even completely stolen his pic on the topic as it is a clear, diagrammatic representation of an intriguing axiom.........

.......Now it seems that if one is seeking social / sexual meetings one MUST by very definition classify their own looks and then aim at least one - or preferably MORE - levels above......

.....If you are naturally fit - you must ONLY ever aim for and accept invitations from someone who has a gym built athletic - but not huge - build.....

....If you are gym built athletic with pecs and respectable guns - you must ONLY ever aim for someone who requires a diet of three skinless grilled whole chickens and several protein supplements per day whilst fitting in at least two weights workouts (free-weights only of course - never machines ).....

.....If you are someone who has done porn (even if you were just the dude who got the sandwiches) you must ONLY ever date / fuck porn stars and ONLY if they are actually currently employed as such. Retired porn stars are not viable.....

....If you are a twink who models on the side whilst going to uni (or not) you can only accept invitations or solicitations from someone who looks EXACTLY like you - their hair may differ - but their overall look may not.....

....If you are someone who is professionally employed - you must ONLY ever aim for those who earn at LEAST 25k a year more than you - however, that rule MAY be bent if the invitation comes from a hot bartender or smoking hot model whose day job is as a barista.....

.....Interestingly - in MY world - that of the chub / bear / cub culture - the only requirement seems to be a pulse and a propensity for beer and greasy food - WOO HOO !!! - except I'm allergic to beer.....

On a personal note - to the Army Lad in California - I am particular touched by the breadth and depth of what you would like to do to me - and I am particularly impressed that you seem to have my good health in mind, hence all the conversations about tossing my salad - and indeed you are the finest thing I've personally seen in a long time - so thank you for buoying my self esteem to the level you did. The Taliban pose as simple villagers and gladly accept Marine aid including medical supplies, medical treatment and food - they then report the position of the Marines providing that aid, to their Taliban colleagues so they can lay IED's on the route they will take when they leave and kill the Marines who were just there helping them all.

So............ the world is outraged because four Marines - who have most likely lost many fellow Marines to these abhorrent excuses for individuals - decided to pee on a dead Taliban...Here's the vid being played on every news network in the world...

....Personally - I would have taken a dump on him.... Why? Because the Taliban are not people - they are evil - pure unadulterated evil. And if they want to bring it - they better be able to take it.

.........There is a young about to turn 21 yr old man in my office. Not a bad lad. The Ladies love him. And he loves them.... However, he is truly the gayest str8 man I know....

.....2 Return...So...Where The Fuck Have I Been?....

Well....... Today I am right here..

....the last month has been a combination of broken computer, lots of work, lots of counselling, and, lots of thinking..

....Bubb and I are in a much better place and really enjoying our friendship. He was sweet and not only got me a new puter - but also an iPad!!!!! We love the Bubb :)

...I've been thinking alot and have decided that three things need to happen -
1 - I need to fulfil some goals I've been pretty lazy about ie my novel and screenplay
2 - I have to take better care of my health. That means improving my diet and losing some weight.
3 - I need a change of direction in my job. That could mean a different focus in my current job or a new job. We will see.

...I also need to rediscover my faith. My depression has taken the focus away from many things in my life. I need to take back that control, be less of a victim, and more in charge...

...I also need to find a way past this barrier I've erected where my weight and my (lack of a) social life is concerned...

...With my new counsellor and a renewed faith in myself and my friendship w Bubb, I actually feel like I can win again..

... I look forward to continuing to share my journey through life, faith, people and - of course - porn ;) in the new year...

..........I use "The N Word"........... because it is a profanity.........an insult...... an abhorrence that was used to demonise and subjugate an entire race - indeed - entire generations of a race......

Use in language

Non-rhotic English-speakers, such as speakers of many British dialects and African American Vernacular English, pronounce "nigger" and "nigga" identically, as their accents do not distinguish between these two words.

Cultural influence

The term "nigga, please", first used in the 1970s by comics such as Paul Mooney as "a funny punctuation in jokes about Blacks,"^[14] is now heard routinely in comedy routines by African Americans. The growing use of the term is often attributed to its ubiquity in modern American hip hop music.^[15]^[16] Examples include: hip-hop group Niggaz Wit' Attitude (N.W.A.), A Tribe Called Quest's "Sucka Nigga", Notorious B.I.G.'s song, "The Realest Niggaz", Jay-Z's "Jigga That Nigga" and Snoop Dogg's "For All My Niggaz and Bitches". Ol' Dirty Bastard uses the term 76 times in his Nigga Please album (not including repetitions in choruses).^[16] This is reflected in the term's wide use in modern American gang culture. According to a Texas Monthly article about Houston gangs, many Hispanic street gang members call each other niggah.^[17]

However, its use has spread beyond North America. The Portuguese comedy group, Gato Fedorento, uses the word nigga in an audio sketch, where the four individuals (all Caucasian) say they are niggas ("I'm nigga, nigga; are you nigga, nigga?"), and end up admitting that they do not know what nigga means, although "people say it's amazing" (since the word isn't familiar for most Portuguese people, and is seen in the sketch simply as a strange-sounding word). Da Weasel later sang a song named "Nigga" in Gato Fedorento's last episode of season 5.^{[citation needed]}

Comedian Chris Rock's routine "Niggas vs. Black People" distinguishes a nigga, which he defined as a "low-expectation-having motherfucker", from a "black person". In contrast, Tupac Shakur distinguished between nigger and nigga: "Niggers was the ones on the rope, hanging off the thing; niggas is the ones with gold ropes, hanging out at clubs."^[18] Tupac, who has been credited with legitimizing the term, said his song N.I.G.G.A. stood for "Never Ignorant Getting Goals Accomplished."^[19]

Use in trademarks or brand names

The Lanham Act does not permit registration of trademarks containing terms that may disparage persons or bring them into disrepute.^[20] Registration by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) of terms that are historically considered disparaging to groups of people has been allowed in some circumstances. Self-disparaging trademarks have been allowed in some cases where the applicant has shown that the mark as-used is not considered by the relevant group to be disparaging.^[21]

In 1995, two Houston, Texas men filed a trademark application with the PTO for the words "Naturally Intelligent God Gifted Africans," and its acronym. The application was rejected, as were numerous subsequent applications for variations of the word nigga. Most recently, comedian Damon Wayans twice attempted to trademark a brand name called Nigga, "featuring clothing, books, music and general merchandise."^[15] The PTO refused the application, stating "the very fact that debate is ongoing regarding in-[ethnic]-group usage, shows that a substantial composite of African Americans find the term 'nigga' to be offensive."^[16]

When women and girls are the enemy

Gender is the new battleground as ultra-orthodox Jews try to impose their conservative values in Israel, writes Ruth Pollard in Jerusalem.

Imagine a world where all photographs of women and girls - on posters, advertising material, buses, billboards and shop windows - gradually disappear from public view; where supermarket lines are segregated and men and women sit in different sections of public transport: men at the front, women at the back.

Israel's ultra-Orthodox, or Haredi, community may be just a large (and growing) minority, but the impact of its deeply conservative values is being felt strongly in the country.

Not content with segregated streets, queues and buses, extremist members of the Haredi have turned their attention to the city of Bet Shemesh, 30 kilometres to the west of Jerusalem.

Here, Jewish girls as young as six, wearing a conservative uniform of skirts below the knee and shirts to the elbow, are being targeted by the Haredi, called ''pritzas'' (prostitutes) for being ''immodestly dressed'' as they walk into Orot girls school, a state-funded religious-nationalist school. The Haredi are demanding the girls cover up. And, it doesn't end there. Fresh from their fight last month to segregate an entire street in the ultra-Orthodox Jerusalem neighbourhood of Mea Sharim during the religious celebration of Sukkot - the Haredi have set their sights on billboards and other advertising material that feature images of women.

So far the ultra-Orthodox have managed to ensure a public health campaign to attract organ donors only uses pictures of men, while an insurance company has removed images of girls from its child health promotional material.

Speaking to Israel's Army Radio about his company's organ donor advertisements, Ohad Gibli, deputy director of marketing for the Canaan advertising agency, said: ''We have learned that an ad campaign in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak that includes pictures of women will remain up for hours at best, and in other cases, will lead to the vandalisation and torching of buses.''

Indeed, as Chief Justice Dorit Beinisch was quoted as saying during a September High Court hearing over the segregation of the Mea Sharim street, gender segregation ''began with buses, continued with supermarkets and reached the streets. It's not going away, just the opposite.''

Orot girls school may be the focus of battle between Jews in Bet Shemesh but it is also a reflection of a wider battle across Israel between the the ultra-orthodox on one side and and the religious nationalist and secular Jews on the other.

Last week Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat publicly intervened in the growing dispute over the display of women's images, writing a letter to Police Commander Niso Shaham stating: ''We must make sure that those who want to advertise [with] women's images in the city can do so without fear of vandalism and defacement of billboards or buses showing women.''

On November 11, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and Beersheba to sing in protest at the Haredi stance against women and an incident at an Israel Defence Forces event, where four ultra-Orthodox male cadets left a function because women were singing.

Describing itself as a ''society of scholars'', the Haredi community is one of the fastest growing in Israel. A November 2010 report by Haifa University demographers, Arnon Soffer and Evgenia Bystrov, estimates 30 per cent of all Jewish newborns in Israel are Haredi, while government statistics predict that by 2025 the Haredim will have jumped from 9 per cent of the population to 15 per cent.

Tensions are also exacerbated by the fact that, in a country that has compulsory military service for men and women, most Haredi do not serve in the military.

And because of their focus on religious study, most Haredi men do not work, relying instead on social welfare provided by the government, or the income earned by their wives, who also give birth to large numbers of children, often up to eight or nine per family.

Meanwhile, many extreme Haredi do not recognise the authority of the government, the police or the courts, and describe themselves as ''anti-Zionist'' - they are against anything that is privileged over the Torah.

Tamar El Or, a professor of anthropology and sociology at the Hebrew University has lived with Haredi families as part of her research into the community. For many years, she says, they felt as if their communities were marginalised, that they were living on the fringe of the Zionist project. Now all that has changed.

''They feel very safe and at home in Jerusalem,'' Professor El Or says. ''When you walk through the streets of Jerusalem you can feel that the majority of the public looks either ultra-Orthodox or Zionist orthodox, and if you want to find the non-orthodox cultural sites, the non-Kosher restaurants, you now have to make extra effort.

''The balance has tipped, and the non-orthodox people in Jerusalem are the minority, not just on the numbers, but on the cultural feeling, the atmosphere.''

Meanwhile, Jerusalem women are fighting back with a guerrilla campaign of their own - having their photographs taken and hanging them from buildings throughout the city with the slogan ''returning women to Jerusalem billboards''.

''Many of these women are modern, Orthodox women who care about the religion and know that it is possible to live a full religious life without these social restrictions, without also stepping outside beliefs or morals,'' Professor El Or says. ''They believe in religious life as well as gender equality.''

The rise of the Haredim has been disastrous for the country's economy, according to Gershom Gorenberg, author of The Unmaking of Israel.

Gorenberg writes that Israel's ultra-Orthodox community is becoming ever more dependent on the state and, through it, on other people's labour.

''By exempting the ultra-Orthodox from basic general educational requirements, the democratic state fosters a burgeoning sector of society that neither understands nor values democracy.

''And to protect their own growing settlements, Haredi parties are now essential partners in the pro-settlement coalitions of the right,'' he warns.

It is a subject close to the heart of Jerusalem's deputy mayor, Naomi Tzur, who describes the city as one of the country's poorest, partly because the growth of the Haredi community.

Yet despite the sustained Haredi campaign to impose their values on others, Tzur is optimistic about returning the city to a place where secular Jews feel comfortable.

The ''tide is turning'', she says. Previous Jerusalem city councils dominated by the ultra-Orthodox allowed new Haredi neighbourhoods to be built without sufficient infrastructure, such as kindergartens and medical clinics, to support them.

Instead these services were placed in the wider community, creating an opportunity for the closed religious communities to expand and then attempt to impose their restrictions on the secular residents, she says.

''We are saying 'no' to this,'' Tzur says. ''We are not allowing any new residential developments to go ahead without the appropriate institutions to ensure this imbalance is being redressed.''

She describes this expansion of ultra-Orthodox institutions into secular neighbourhoods as ''wicked'' and highlights the need to restore a ''demographic balance'' to the conflicted city of Jerusalem.

''And by that I do not mean a demographic balance of Jewish, Christian and Muslim … I mean getting a better balance of families where both parents are working and paying taxes,'' she says.

In September the city opened 30 new kindergartens in the ''general sector'' for about 900 children, she says. This indicates there has been an increase in secular and orthodox families moving to Jerusalem, who will contribute to life in the city, she says, as opposed to the many ultra-Orthodox who live on social security from the state and ''only take, never give''.

In the Haredi neighbourhood of Mea Sharim, a suburb close to Jerusalem's Old City, where ultra-Orthodox Jewish men dress in long black overcoats and large black hats, and where women cover up to ensure as little skin as possible is exposed, it is like taking a step back in time.

Large black and white posters are plastered throughout the neighbourhood urging women to dress appropriately, and the battle to guard its residents' morals is hard-fought.

''We beg you with all our hearts, please don't pass through this neighbourhood in immodest dress. Modest dress includes closed blouse, long sleeves, skirts - no pants,'' one poster reads.

Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath) is strictly observed - the streets are closed off with police barriers from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening, and there is a ban on driving and the use of electricity.

Gender segregation is extensive - the supermarkets have men-only and women-only queues, and the ice cream shop has separate entrances. The simple ritual of gathering for ice cream, along with a love of music and books, are three pastimes the extremist Haredi have tried to suppress.

Manny's book shop, a large, ultra-Orthodox book store brimming with texts in Hebrew and English, as well as an excellent selection of Hanukkah candles and other religious artefacts, is one of several businesses in Mea Sharim that has born the brunt of the Haredi fury.

Since it opened in March 2010, a small segment of the ultra-Orthodox community has criticised its customers (some of whom are not dressed modestly enough), its books (some of which are published by secular publishers in English), its signage (too colourful) and its advertising (which focuses on having a good time).

On many occasions Marlene Samuels and her husband Manny have arrived at work to find every single window of their shop smashed, their locks glued, the windows defaced with paint, and excrement strewn throughout the store. Other owners of the bookstore have been threatened and their homes vandalised.

But Marlene she says the group of 60 to 100 men who carry out these acts are on the fringes of the ultra-Orthodox community.

''They are a zealous group of extremists - they are not religious, they do not represent the religious community in Mea Sharim or the Jewish people at all … this is not Judaism,'' she says.

''They are thugs, hooligans and criminals, and like any criminal they have got to be arrested and put into prison.''

Frustrated by the lack of action by police, despite her constant reports and the provision of video evidence, Samuels went to the media.

''The police do not like to come into this area because of the violence they encounter when they do. These thugs throw stones at their cars, they break the car windows, they attack the police when they get out of the cars.

''But eventually the police did come in and make some arrests and things started to quieten down.''

''It is such a bad reflection on the religious community because people who are hearing the news are then going to feel negative against the Haredim. But this is a desecration of God's name.''

Other moderate Haredim, such as Jerusalem Post columnist Jonathan Rosenblum, agree ''the zealots'' are tarnishing the reputation of the entire community.

''A lot of religious movements give people license to unleash their psychopathic tendencies,'' he says. ''But they are a very small part of the picture. They are not socialised to live in a mixed community.''

It is wrong to ''impose religious rules'' outside Haredi communities, he says, while within these societies ''it is impossible to draw the wagons much closer.''

As the symbolic battle over women and the public display of their image continues, a new report from the World Economic Forum indicates women's status in Israel is deteriorating year by year.

On measures such as economic participation, health and education levels and political empowerment, Israel has fallen in the rankings on the Global Gender Gap index for the second year in a row, and now sits at 55 of the 135 countries measured for the report, down from 52 in 2010 and 45 in 2009.

It's hard to see how removing images of women from public life will improve the nation's performance.

.......A very sad side effect of being a person with Faith these days is that Fundamentalists / Extremists / Hardliners / Ulta-Orthodox / Fuck-knuckles have made it very hard to be someone who publicly lives their faith. ....I believe in the concept of Tikkun Olam - wholistically translated as "Repairing the World"... This means I try to live in the world by example. This by no means signifies a belief in self-perfection, rather that it is a journey to being a BETTER person.... a journey and task that I recognise is an ongoing and life long one........

..... I believe in the concept of Tzedakah ... often translated as "Charity" although most Jews prefer to refer to it as "Good Deeds".......... I believe this to be a beautiful practice in Judasim and can be something as simple as buying someone a coffee without them expecting it - to giving someone who has been having a hard time of it a handful of cash or several bags of groceries.....

.....Someone said to me upon hearing that I was a Jew was how do I believe in a Divine Creator when science has proven evolution and even NOW has proven the birth of the universe was through the big bang. My answer was simple... they actually HAVEN'T proven the Big Bang Construct. They have an excellent theory - and even then, if it is proven, it doesn't go against my faith. Why? Because of the beautiful symmetry of the Universe. Nothing exists on it's own. And that is MY belief...... irrespective of any scientific theory that is proven or disproven. Faith and science can actually exist quiet nicely side by side - it is only fundamentalists / extremists that try to corrupt one with the other.

....I believe........... and if required, I will go to arms to protect YOUR right to NOT believe..... all I ask is that you respect MY right to believe..... difference is diversity and diversity is strength.....

Presidential slur among best open-mic gaffes

French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "liar" in talks with US President Barack Obama, who then complained of having to deal with him daily.

The private conversation, held during the G20 summit in the French city of Cannes last week, was overheard by a number of journalists after it was inadvertently transmitted over a system used for translation, media website Arret sur Images reported.

"I can't stand him any more, he's a liar," Mr Sarkozy said in French during the talks.

"You may be sick of him, but me, I have to deal with him every day," Mr Obama replied in comments that were translated into French.

A number of journalists have confirmed hearing the remarks.

Without providing further quotes, the website said Mr Obama had also chastised Mr Sarkozy for not having informed the United States of France's plans to vote in favour of Palestinian membership in UN cultural agency UNESCO.

Journalists were able to hear the conversation after they were given translation devices for a press conference but told they would receive headphones later, the website reported.

Plugging their own headphones into the devices, they realised they could hear the French translation of the conversation between the two leaders.

The website quoted a number of journalists saying a group decision was made not to report the conversation as it was considered private and off-the-record.

When asked about the incident, French foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero told journalists that it was "hype".

"I've heard about the hype ... I don't want to talk about it. It's hype," MrValero said, telling journalists to ask Mr Sarkozy's office to confirm the remarks.

"Ask the Elysee to confirm or deny [the reported quotes]," Mr Valero said.

"All this is getting us away from what's essential. All we want is to keep working so that things move forward because things aren't moving forward [on the Middle East]", he said.

French officials have been increasingly critical of Mr Netanyahu's ongoing Jewish settlement building on occupied Palestinian land, saying such moves prevent the resumption of peace talks.

The story of the remarks was carried on the websites of most major Israeli newspapers.

The Prime Minister's office had no immediate reaction to the report and the foreign ministry refused to comment.

Israel public radio correspondent Gidon Kutz, who covered the Cannes summit, said journalists who overheard the private conversation had agreed not to report the story due to "correctness and in order not to embarrass the presidential press service".

Speaking to Parliament on Tuesday, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe insisted that France and Mr Sarkozy had a balanced position on the Middle East conflict, but he did not mention the undiplomatic incident in Cannes.

"We have a balanced position," Mr Juppe said during a discussion of his ministry's budget for 2012.

"In his speech at the United Nations General Assembly the President said very clearly that if Israel's security was in question, we would be on Israel's side," Mr Juppe said.

"But he also said that after so many decades it was no longer possible to accept that the Palestinian Authority is not little by little being recognised as a state.

France confirmed last week that it would abstain from a Security Council vote on full Palestinian membership of the United Nations, calling instead for Palestine to be given non-member observer status.

The White House sidestepped questions about the matter.

"I don't have any comment on a reported conversation that apparently took place in a bilateral [meeting]," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Tuesday.

..................actually I don't - although my doctor CERTAINLY earned his money yesterday.......

...........I seem to have caught the virus a couple of work colleagues are passing back and forth (grist for the rumour mill if you ask me - and I am gunna get a-starting a few let me tell you).....

.......Secondly I went to the doctor last night a for a new Anti-Depressant and WOW - it turned into a quasi-counselling session where a lot more came out than my desire for a med that actually works......... Needless to say he was brilliant - as always - and there is not just light at the end of the tunnel - I feel like I am now standing on the top of a hill as dawn breaks and you feel those first few rays of sunshine caress you from the top of your head down and that warmth enfolds you like a mother's embrace......

..... So whilst I am feeling dreadful today - "Francis, now I know why you looked like you did" (internal joke) - I also feel that there is now serious cause for a little joy.....

So yesterday was the Melbourne cup day - the Aussie equivalent of The Kentucky Derby - and my department at work went out for a luncheon at a lovely restaurant.

Long story short - I drank too much - mixed drinks - threw up - clothes were soiled - passed out sitting on a toilet *thankfully* w my pants on.

Anyway - today was the "walk of shame" into work and thankfully my workmates handled it with humor and good natured ribbing.

Kudos to two of my colleagues who have moved from "liked" to "adore". They basically cleaned me up as best as they could and stayed with me until Mum turned up and took me home. ( they basically did the equivalent of 'holding my hair' ).

Went to the docs this morning and found out I also have a touch of food poisoning.

Long story short - I work w the best people in Brisbane. And they handled my out of character but clearly inappropriate behavior w real class.

Now I'm taking two aspirin, a large glass of water, eating some Chinese Food, and having an early night.

Mr. Dylan, 27, filmed two bareback blue movies—the other was for Treasure Island Media—before deciding that he’d rather shoot condoms-only. But with the release of the SX Video film, he’s concerned future directors, costars and others in the biz might have the wrong idea about him.

JCA: What’s the timeline here? When did you film for SX Video and Treasure Island?
MARC DYLAN: I talked to them in early June. I had emailed a lot of companies and they responded first and offered to film with me. I was just really excited to get to try to doing porn, so I said yes. They shot with me in early July.

JCA: What was that experience like for you?
DYLAN: After my second shoot, I just really felt uncomfortable with the barebacking even though they pair negative guys together [after testing], so I declined shooting with them anymore, even though they made me a really good offer. Shooting with them was an interesting experience for my first time ever doing porn. They were nice and friendly people, but I just decided it wasn’t for me. About the same time, I started getting some interest from other companies that shoot with condoms, so I jumped on the chance to work with them. I really enjoyed the experience of doing porn, except for the barebacking, so I thought it was good timing.

JCA: What was it about shooting without condoms that made you uncomfortable? Can you talk about that?
DYLAN: In the beginning of August, one of my best friends found out that he was HIV-positive. He had been dating and got it from a boyfriend who was not faithful. Before that, I was just kind of embarrassed that I did the bareback porn since I’m pretty safe in my personal life. My friend’s whole life is changed now and I felt more guilty than embarrassed about the barebacking. He got something without knowingly putting himself at risk since he was in a relationship, and I knowingly put myself at risk just because I was too excited to try porn to wait.

JCA: Why did you want to speak up about it publicly?
DYLAN: People are always entitled to make their own decisions about bareback sex and everything else, but I don’t want to be seen as someone who thinks bareback sex is a great choice or something I do regularly. I got into porn because it’s something I have always wanted to try, I like sex and always have been a little bit of an exhibitionist. But I also thought it would be cool to see some new places and meet new people, and I was curious about what the people who do it are like, and how porn was made, since I watch so much of it.

JCA: Do you regret getting involved in the industry?
DYLAN: I’m really glad to be doing it because I’ve seen some really cool things, had fun, met some really nice people. A few are becoming good friends that I talk to almost every day or two. I just wish how I started was a little different.

JCA: Well, don’t beat yourself up too much about it. You tried something, you decided it wasn’t right for you.
DYLAN: I just wanna make sure people know that since I have done my first [condoms] video, I have not done a bareback video.

JCA: Anything else you want us to know about you?
DYLAN: Well, I live in Mississippi. I was born just outside of New York but I have lived here since I was 10. Other than doing porn, I live a pretty boring, normal life.

...........Last Days In Sydney.............

.......Obligatory Shot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.......

.................So my last full day in Sydney was spent with the ever-so-lovely Host #1 aka Christopher aka Pook aka Twink.... Of course........... every day starts off with breakfast and Pook took me to a fave little cafe of his in the Rocks Section of Sydney called Le Renaissance for a THIS little piece of flaky goodness stuffed and covered with Ham & bechamel sauce :)...

.....mmmmmmmmmm.....

.........Then began the stroll - or, as I like to refer to it - "The Never Ending Bi-Pedal Torture of the Fat and Unfit Man Stuffed with Ham & Bechamel Goodness"............ in other words..... we walked to the Art Gallery of NSW through Circular Quay - past the Opera House - through the Botanical Gardens - eventually...... emphasis EVENTUALLY ending up at the AGNSW......

........Radiance Of The Seas was in as we left the Patisserie.......

.........then past the Opewa Hause...

....Christopher AKA Twink standing there in the humidity posing ever so patiently for me :)....

...Me doing the "Oh look what's over there" dork tourist pose....

......Eventually after MUCH complaining by myself at the torture being imposed upon me by the Pookster - and of course much punching him in the shoulder for it - we arrived at the AGNSW.....
Pook took me to the newest bequeathed collection of contemporary art to the gallery by some dude who croaked - his collection is worth 60million AUD..... and includes THIS wonderful fella...

.......I was actually waiting for this charming beast to go "BOO!"....shudder......

........Next was this piece of mirrored goodness that I was actually enjoying until I heard the soundtrack coming out of small speakers in it, the content of which was a couple planning but ultimately not going through with an extra marital affair............... contemporary art..... I don't get it....... thankfully the Pookster was there to take me through it.... OH here he is in "contemplative gay man" pose............ Bless.................

.........We then retired to the Classical section which *I* adored and Pook was bored shiteless in .... however there is nothing compared to standing infront of an actual Monet and Renoir....... Le Sigh.....

....OH !...... and I even got to play creepy man with camera in the park whilst THIS lovely walked by.....

............Our route took us through Hyde Park, where I snapped a couple of pics of the lovely fountain in the centre of the Park...............

....From there we walked to our bus stop through the uber-grand Queen Victoria Building - AMAZING shopping in there.............

.........We finally arrived at our bus stop where I got to snap a pic of Sydney Town Hall.....

...................Our Bus arrived shortly thereafter and I got to play Creepy Camera Guy On Bus ... Good times................... good times...................

..........The morning of my final day - Sunday - Pook and Host #2 - the very sweet and adorable Marc (partner of Pook) - took me on a tour of their favourite cafes.......... the second stop was this adorable little place where we partook of Coffee and Li-ter-ay-chure......

......Even if I was slightly spooked out to find where Bambi finally ended up.......

.................My next bus trip took me away from the lovely Hosts - good men they are - to Gate 31 at the Virgin Departures Terminal where I was able to spot - in their natural environment - the Himbo and Bimbo as they embarked on their Northerly Migration....................

...Notice his beefy goodness and her vapid expression as she adjusts-again-her hair scrunchie.....

...........And one short flight later - I was picked up by Ima in her little broom-broom and off home I went..................

..........It was a wonderful trip and the Hosts were perfectly welcoming and lovely as I secretly suspected they would be.....

..........However, it IS nice to be home - even if I did have to face the mountain of paperwork awaiting me on my desk at work on the Monday.....
