Jews
over 16 in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk are being told to pay a
special tax and register their identities with the pro-Russian militants
who have taken over the town, according to multiple reports. As
a temporary government stands up in Kiev and all hell breaks loose with
pro-Russian protesters in Crimea, the news is sounding grimmer and
grimmer.
Early
in the Euromaidan revolution that swept Ukrainian President Viktor
Yanukovich, a Russian ally, from power in Kiev, pro-Russian media had sought to portray Euromaidan as an anti-semitic, fascist-led movement
that would wreak havoc on the Ukraine's Jews. But if the Donetsk orders
are to believed, it's Russian forces and their proxies that now
threaten Jews' safety and freedom of movement.
The orders were distributed on flyers throughout the city, according to the wire service JTA and USA TODAY.
Those flyers bear the name and signature of Denis Pushilin, leader of
the Russian-sympathetic separatist rebels who wrested control of Donetsk
from Ukraine earlier in the month. Pushilin's forces have since
patrolled the streets in black ski masks, AK47s slung over their
shoulders.
Pushilin
confirmed to one source that the flyers belonged to his group, which is
calling itself "Donetsk's temporary government," although elsewhere he
distanced himself from the flyers' content.
The
leaflets, which accuse Ukraine's Jews of supporting nationalist,
pro-Nazi leaders instead of "pro-Slavic" forces in World War II, were
distributed on streets and around synagogues by masked men, according to
JTA:
The
flyers in Donetsk said all Jews who are 16 years old and above should
register at the government building, which separatist protesters are
occupying, and pay a registration fee of $50 by May 3.
"Jews
supported the nationalistic gang of [Stepan] Bandera in Kiev," the
authors wrote in reference to the Ukrainian Nationalist leader who in
the 1940s fought with Nazi Germany against Soviet troops before he and
his men took up arms against the German occupation.
The flyers also said Jews were hostile to the Donetsk Republic.
They were required to report any real estate and automobiles, the flyers also said.
Should
Ukrainians of "Jewish nationality" fail to comply, they will lose their
citizenship and "be forced outside the country with a confiscation of
property," the flyers state.
Update: The New Republic's excellent reporter and Eurasia expert Julia Ioffe reports that
Ukrainian Jewish leaders believe the flyers may have been a provocation
by pro-Ukrainian elements to paint the Donetsk separatists as
anti-semitic. "The Jews of Donetsk and eastern Ukraine may have been
asked by a leaflet to register, but it has not been enforced nor are any
Ukrainian Jews registering themselves," she writes.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Kerry cited the flyers
as "grotesque" evidence of anti-semitic jockeying in the Ukraine
crisis, and the Anti-Defamation League issued a condemnation of the
flyer, regardless of its origins. "We are skeptical about the flier's
authenticity, but the instructions clearly recall the Nazi era and have
the effect of intimidating the local Jewish community," ADL director
Abraham H. Foxman said in a press statement:
"We
have seen a series of cynical and politically manipulative uses and
accusations of anti-Semitism in Ukraine over the past year. The
perpetrators and their targets are opposing politicians and political
movements, but the true victims are the Jewish communities."

Whatever the fuck reason these things were sent out for... this is OUTRAGEOUS!!
NATO - UN - UK - UE - USA need to get their arses into gear and fix this shit - no Holocaust 2....
....actually it is going to occur on the Gold Coast - about 60miles south of Brisbane - but the fact that it is occurring at ALL in a country that has anti-discrimination legislation and laws against inciting hatred is absolutely disgusting.... it should be shut down and banned........
Neo-Nazi music festival to go ahead
Queensland Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie has maintained
the stance of his Labor predecessor concerning a major white-pride
event to be held in Brisbane this weekend.
The Hammered music festival is expected to draw white
supremacists from Australia and overseas to a secret location in the
city on Saturday.
Mr Bleijie said while he was “disgusted” by the event, banning it was out of the question in the interests of free speech.

“While the government does not condone neo-Nazi or
extremist beliefs, it is not illegal to hold an event such as this,” Mr
Bleijie told brisbanetimes.com.au.
“The Queensland government will not ban this festival,
but any attendees who incite or commit violence or racism will be dealt
with by the police.”
Mr Bleijie's stance echoes that of former
Attorney-General Paul Lucas, who dismissed calls for the festival's
banning and the punishment of its organisers ahead of the March
election.
The lack of action has angered former independent member for Burnett Rob Messenger, who launched a Parliamentary e-Petition against the “Neo Nazi, race hatred-inspired gathering” in January.
Mr Messenger said he was frustrated the views of nearly
2000 petition signatories had been ignored, and allowing Hammered to
proceed made Queensland a national “laughing stock”.
“The government, I believe, under current Queensland laws, has the ability to stop the rally,” he said.
“I believe that it breaches anti-discrimination
(legislation) as it stands, but in the meantime, and at the very least,
the (Attorney-General) should untie the hands of the Queensland police
and allow them to investigate the concert promoters and their public
advertising.”
The Hammered Festival is organised by a group called the
Southern Cross Hammerskins, a local branch of an international
association spawned from the American white power skinhead movement.
This is the first year the three-year-old festival will
be held in Brisbane, and websites promoting the event say it coincides
with the 20th anniversary of the Southern Cross Hammerskins in
Australia.
Other websites promoting the festival contain pro-Nazi media including YouTube video clips celebrating Adolf Hitler.
Comment was sought from the Southern Cross Hammerskins.
Russian neo-Nazi youth gang jailed for race-hate spree that killed 27
FOUR Russian neo-Nazis were handed life sentences on yesterday for the murder of 27 youths in a 2007-2008 spree that shocked Moscow and led to tougher hate crime laws.
The court also convicted several of the 13 gang members of terrorism for plotting a suburban Moscow train station bombing that was uncovered in time by the police.
The court handed 10- to 23-year prison terms to eight members of the group while one person received a suspended sentence for cooperating with the investigation.
The Nationalist-Socialist Society was a legally registered organisation when it began its hunt on young ethnic minorities who arrived in the Russian capital from southern Muslim republics and the Central Asian states.
Russian media reports said at least one of the attacks was videotaped then distributed on Russian nationalist websites.
An outcry from human rights groups over these and similar attacks prompted the Kremlin to call for a review of Russian nationalist groups' links to hate crime.
The Kremlin had initially provided informal backing to some of these organisations as part of its drive to improve young people's interest in politics.
The Nationalist-Socialist Society was formally banned in February 2010 and several similar groups have since been forced to disband.
But they maintain a strong presence on Russian social media networks and often manage to bring out large numbers of supporters for protests outside foreign embassy in times of diplomatic tensions with the West.
Monday's hearing received national media attention and saw the group walk into court chanting neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic slogans and repeatedly jeering the judge from the dock.
One member of the gang wore a black t-shirt with a skull and bones while others wore surgical masks to hide their identities. Several had shaved heads.
Presiding judge Nikolai Tkachuk quickly read through the 250 page verdict before delivering his sentence and calling gang leader Lev Molotkov "an extraordinary danger to Russian society".
The father of one of the defendants broke down in tears after the verdict while the group chanted in unison: "Our conscience stands above the law."
The neo-Nazi leader had pleaded not guilty.
"We plan to appeal,'' defence attorney Maria Malakhovskayasaid.
"This ruling was simply not objective."
Her client -- a 21-year old unemployed man identified as one of the senior gang members -- received 20 years behind bars.
A recent spike in ethnic violence prompted the Russian authorities to crack down on neo-Nazi groups and ban some organisations that had operated in the open for years.
The rise in ethnic tension in Moscow and other major cities spilled over in December when a massive riot broke out near the Kremlin following the murder of a nationalist supporter of a Moscow football club by a Muslim suspect.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin later raised eyebrows by visiting the grave of the slain football fan in the company of several nationalist organisations that took part in December's rioting.
But both he and President Dmitry Medvedev have identified racism as one of the country's more pressing social concerns and chaired various meetings designed to address Russian xenophobia.
Saddened and galled. That's how I felt when I read this week's news about Australians' attitudes to racial and cultural minorities, their prejudices against Muslims, Jews, Asians, and, most ludicrously of all, the original inhabitants of this country, the Aboriginal people. I wasn't even consoled by the fact that anti-British, Italian and Christian sentiments across Australia were recorded at less than 10 per cent. With so many different cultures and nationalities being distrusted, who was there left to detest? And who were all these ''Australians'' doing the detesting?
I was so dispirited with the University of Western Sydney's findings on racism that I had to read the results for myself. But when I went to the university's website, an unexpectedly heartening picture emerged.
The findings weren't all bad. In fact, read another way, they could be seen as a tribute to the decency and humanity of Australians.

The university found that ''Australians are largely tolerant people who are accepting and welcoming of other cultures. The survey data indicates that a large majority of Australians are positive about living in a multicultural society. Most Australians feel secure and comfortable with cultural difference''. (My emphases.)
When asked ''is it a good thing for a society to be made up of people from different cultures?'', 86.8 per cent of Australians agreed it was (in Victoria, 89.5 per cent agreed). When asked ''do you feel secure when you are with people of different ethnic backgrounds?'', 78.1 per cent of Australians said they did. (In Victoria, 81.4 per cent responded positively.)
''Racists'', it emerged, were the real minorities in this country: ''about one in 10 Australians have very problematic views on diversity and on ethnic differences. They believe that some races are naturally inferior or superior, and they believe in the need to keep groups separated. These separatists and supremacists are a destructive minority.''
(Interestingly, those most likely to hold racist attitudes tend to be older, non-tertiary educated, do not speak a language other than English, are Australian-born, and male.)
And while one in 10 may still sound like one too many, it seemed to me that these statistics suggested that Australia must surely be one of the least racist countries in the world. I rang Professor Kevin Dunn, one of the chief researchers, and asked him if this was correct. His response was galvanising. He and his team had asked this very question, and comparative studies confirmed that Australia did indeed fare well. In parts of western Europe, three in 10 people were racists, and the figure was higher in parts of eastern Europe. The only place Dunn had found that was less racist than Australia (and then only a little less so), was Canada.
''But that's about it,'' he said. ''I can't find many other places in the world that would outperform Australia on positivity to diversity.''
This is the other side of the racism story, an encouraging, uplifting and crucial side that needs to be broadcast - loudly. It is important that the ''destructive minority'' of racists in Australia realise that they are just that, a deviance from the norm, and that the silent majority of Australians are open-minded and accepting. Significantly, research into racism shows that if people with racist views are made to feel as though their views are ''mainstream'', they are emboldened in their racist behaviour (and, let's be clear, it's not just people of ''Anglo'' backgrounds who may hold racist views). Politicians who insist on denying that racism exists and who pass it off as ''normal'' or even ''patriotic'' to be intolerant, are playing an ugly and dangerous game. Is this ringing any bells?
In the past decade, we have seen some political parties and politicians, and some sections of the media, insidiously bolster the egos of racists and make them feel as though their attitudes were not only acceptable but widely held.
As the University of Western Sydney's research points out: ''Social norms are considerably powerful and can legitimise poor attitudes. There is mounting evidence that telling people that their views were not consensually shared can help reduce prejudice.''
Rather than being a challenge to federal Immigration Minister Chris Bowen's affirmation of Australia's commitment to multiculturalism, the university's findings reinforce his position. Bowen is showing genuine leadership. He and the Gillard government are refusing to pander to people's baser instincts for short-term political gain. And it's about time.
''It's overdue,'' says Dunn. ''For 15 years [multiculturalism] has withered and that's a dangerous place to be in how you manage cultural diversity.''
This does not mean that people should not feel free to express their concerns and anxieties about the customs of certain cultures, and to condemn practices and values that are anathema to a contemporary, secular and democratic Australian society. Indeed, the University of Western Sydney's research emphasises that one way to combat racism is to encourage people to express their differences and fears. But a discussion about multiculturalism - and racism - must not be hijacked by political expediency or the likes of shock jocks and sensationalist scribes who are not at all interested in sincerely debating the issues, but who wish only to fan the flames of hatred and misunderstanding, and who would have us believe that the deviant minority is the majority.
We have learnt nothing from the past - but then we have - and then we haven't.
For another interesting article on the level of racism still prevalent in another modern country - Germany - dare I say the Grand-pa-pa of racism........ read THIS article over at Bill In Exile.
I am sickened - but not surprised - somewhat heartened - but still pissed that we have to bring this up again and again ................ which means really - we don't learn.
