THE man killed in a videotaped attack that was discovered after body parts were mailed to Canada's top political parties was a Chinese student, police say, as authorities in France search for the suspect, a Canadian porn actor. 

Montreal Police Commander Ian Lafreniere identified the victim as Jun Lin, 33. Police have said he dated Luka Rocco Magnotta, who is now on Interpol's equivalent of its most-wanted list.
A senior French police official said he is sure Magnotta is in France and that he has been there in the past. Another French police official said Magnotta apparently flew to Paris from Montreal last weekend, before the case emerged.

Commander Lafreniere said Jun Lin doesn't have family in Montreal but a family member reported him missing on Tuesday. He had last been seen on May 24. Commander Lafreniere said the murder occurred on the night of May 24-25, and the suspect left for Europe on May 26.
According to a missing person's notice on the website of the Chinese consulate in Montreal, the victim was from the city of Wuhan and arrived in Montreal in July 2011.
"He is a Chinese citizen who studied at a university here in Montreal and was here for a certain time," Commander Lafreniere said.

"Thanks to the Chinese embassy, we have been able to reach the family with the sad news of what happened," he said.

A spokesman for Concordia University said Lin was registered as an undergraduate in the department of engineering and computer science.

The case began on Tuesday, when a package containing a severed foot was opened at the ruling Conservative Party headquarters. A hand was discovered at a postal facility, addressed to the Liberal party of Canada. A torso was found in a suitcase on a garbage dump in Montreal, outside Magnotta's apartment building.

Montreal police have said they believe Magnotta, 29, fled for France based on evidence they found at his apartment and a blog he once wrote about how to disappear.
"What will hinder him the most is what he used to glorify himself, the web, with all the photos we have of him," Commander Lafreniere said. But he warned that Magnotta is "someone who can disguise himself, he can change into a woman, wear a wig".

Police suspect Magnotta filmed the murder. The video, posted online, shows a man stabbing another man with an ice pick while the victim lies naked and tied up. The first man later reveals he has slashed the other man's throat. He also dismembers the corpse and performs sexual acts with it.

"We have quite convincing proof of the crime he committed," Commander Lafreniere said, referring to the video that police have been trying to get removed from the internet. He said veteran officers said it was the most horrific scene they had ever seen on video.

"It's not a movie, it's not something that was made up, it's a real human getting decapitated in front of the camera," he said.
Other body parts remain missing.

The mystery man has been linked previously to killing kittens, calling himself "the kitten vacuumer".  Indeed, Luka Rocco Magnotta has left an indelible digital footprint that links him to chatrooms, Facebook pages, blogs, porn sites and YouTube videos.

One such video showed him suffocating a pair of kittens, The Montreal Gazette reported.

Police said Magnotta's birth name is Eric Clinton Newman and is also known by the name Vladimir Romanov, and they described him as white and 1.78 metre tall with blue eyes and black hair. A police official said he was a porn actor.

They say the older you get, the less you care about what people think. The physical reason for elderly insouciance may be frontal lobe degeneration resulting in a loss of inhibition and social judgment.
But that's no excuse for the vile anti-Semitic outburst by Helen Thomas, America's "dean" of the White House press corps, who said Jews should "get the hell out" of Israel and "go home" to Poland or Germany.

Facing a barrage of well-deserved criticism, Thomas resigned on Monday from her job as a columnist with the Hearst News Service, just a couple of months before her 90th birthday. The doyenne of presidential press conferences going back to John F. Kennedy's days thus ended her 70-year career in disgrace.But her outburst was no aberration. She held her honoured status in the front row of the briefing room with the blessing of colleagues whose benign tolerance of her extreme utterings is a testament either to their belief in free speech or their relief at having her say the things they were too polite to ask.

In one press conference she prefaced a typical tirade by calling then president George Bush "the worst president in all of American history". However debatable that statement was, such ideological sloganeering didn't belong in a White House press conference and reflected poorly on the press corps as a whole.

Thomas's latest comments were videotaped two weeks ago by Rabbi David Nesenoff of RabbiLive.com who was interviewing people at a Jewish heritage celebration at the White House. They only came to prominence when posted on the Drudge Report website last weekend, at the height of world condemnation of Israel for the botched raid on the Gaza "peace" flotilla. They make for illuminating reading.

"Any comments on Israel? We're asking everybody today," asks Nesenoff, who is clearly Jewish, and is wearing a yarmulke, as do his 17-year-old son and his friend.
"Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine," says Thomas.
"Oh. Any better comments?" asks Nesenoff, a bit taken aback.
Thomas: "Remember, these people are occupied, and it's their land, not German and not Polish."
Nesenoff: "So where should they go? What should they do?"
Thomas: "They should go home."
Nesenoff: "Where is home?"
Thomas: "Poland. Germany."
Nesenoff: "So you're saying the Jews should go back to Poland and Germany?"
Thomas: "And America, and everywhere else."

It's such an extraordinarily stupid and shameful statement for anyone who has any knowledge of World War II history, let alone someone who lived through it. But Thomas, the daughter of Lebanese migrants, never made a secret of her anti-Israel sentiments. At one point a White House press adviser sarcastically thanked her for putting the "Hezbollah view". This time, she was just indiscreet enough to express the view that so many of her left-wing Hamas-sympathising ilk in the media do more subtly.

In fact, Thomas should be lauded for her honesty, because her solution is the realistic endgame of the chorus of condemnation of Israel the world has been indulging in ever since the "peace" flotilla of terrorist sympathisers, useful idiots and friendly media sailed for Gaza.
How can a deliberate act of provocation be an act of peace?

Some in the flotilla thought breaking Israel's blockade was a noble humanitarian mission but that doesn't mean hard-core Islamists among them weren't bent on violence, which resulted in nine deaths.

A few facts: Israel's occupation of Gaza ended in 2005. Gaza is under the control of Hamas, the Iranian-backed militant Islamic group declared a terrorist organisation by the United States, Canada, the European Union and Israel. In Australia, only its military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, is so designated.

In Hamas's charter is the destruction of Israel and its replacement with a Palestinian Islamic state. Hamas has fired thousands of rockets at Israeli civilians.

The reason for Israel's blockade of Gaza is self-defence. It doesn't want Hamas to bring lethal weapons into Gaza to fire at its neighbour. Humanitarian aid already goes into Gaza, where the reality is more complex than the flotilla story of bringing medicines and food.

The Washington Post correspondent in Gaza reported last week: "Grocery stores are stocked wall-to-wall with everything from fresh Israeli yoghurts and hummus to Cocoa Puffs smuggled in from Egypt. Pharmacies look as well-supplied as a typical [US chain store]."

During a typical week in May, the Post reported, Israel allowed in 637 truckloads ferrying 14,069 tonnes of food, medicine and other supplies, but it said joblessness was rampant, the economy broken and infrastructure falling apart.

There is no easy option here. Israel either allows Hamas to bomb it into oblivion or it keeps the blockade and hopes Gazans eventually become disillusioned with Hamas.

Strategically, according to impartial analysts inside and outside Israel, such as Stratfor's George Friedman, Israel blundered in not anticipating the violence its commandos would meet when they were lowered from helicopters onto the flotilla vessels. It allowed itself to be provoked and further alienated from the global community.

Certainly, the initial analysis in much of the media was hysterical and unfair. Since then, coverage has been balanced by footage of the "peace" activists attacking Israeli commandos with iron bars and knives as they landed on deck.

Reuters news agency has been criticised for cropping two photographs to remove knives shown in the hands of activists surrounding bloodied Israeli commandos.

But the logic or fairness of Israel's position will never matter to Helen Thomas and her fellow appeasers, who see Israel as the sacrificial lamb.

There were 6 million Jews murdered in Germany and Poland whose silence is an eloquent answer to Thomas's solution to the Middle East's problems.

George Clooney isn't happy just being rich and handsome. He also wants to stop the Iraq War and prevent genocide in Darfur. Sharon Stone, who became famous for wearing no knickers in 1992's Basic Instinct, can now be found wearing sensible trousers and visiting Israel to promote peace.

But these people are actors, not politicians. They're paid a truckload of money to look good under strong light. Why are they lecturing us on social issues?

Of course, Hollywood actors live in a democracy and have the right to speak their mind. It's just that some actors are flakes, and there's a suspicion they're just adopting fashionable causes to appear smarter.

And let's face it. Some actors seem as thick as bricks. For every scholarly type like John Malkovich, who gives the impression he's wandered onto a movie set on his way back from a Mensa conference, there's a knucklehead like Ashton Kucher.

Brad Pitt is another example of someone who is, as they say online, BBHOHM (better before he opens his mouth). He looks good, but in interviews appears to be working overtime to sound like a deep thinker.

Then there's Melanie Griffith, who once amazed a reporter by claiming she'd never heard of the Nazi Holocaust.

But not every famous actor is a thicko. Some had distinguished academic careers before Hollywood. David Duchovny has a PhD in English Lit from Yale. Matt Damon went to Harvard, and Maggie Gyllenhaal graduated from Columbia. Besides being smoking hot, Natalie Portman has a psychology degree from Harvard and speaks fluent Hebrew, French and Japanese.

The debate continues over who's a brainiac and who's an imposter. America's Entertainment Weekly once put together a "50 Smartest People in Hollywood" list that included George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Ben Stiller, Ben Affleck and the rather controversial inclusion of Angelina Jolie.

The New York Daily News responded with a "50 Dumbest People In Hollywood" list, which included Lindsay Lohan, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Charlie Sheen, Russell Crowe and Mel Gibson. This time there were howls of outrage that Angelina wasn't on the list. Ah, well. Jolie may not be a deep thinker, but that hasn't stopped her addressing the World Economic Forum, and at least she's pretty under those lights.
