Russian neo-Nazi youth gang jailed for race-hate spree that killed 27

FOUR Russian neo-Nazis were handed life sentences on yesterday for the murder of 27 youths in a 2007-2008 spree that shocked Moscow and led to tougher hate crime laws.

The court also convicted several of the 13 gang members of terrorism for plotting a suburban Moscow train station bombing that was uncovered in time by the police.

The court handed 10- to 23-year prison terms to eight members of the group while one person received a suspended sentence for cooperating with the investigation.

The Nationalist-Socialist Society was a legally registered organisation when it began its hunt on young ethnic minorities who arrived in the Russian capital from southern Muslim republics and the Central Asian states.

Russian media reports said at least one of the attacks was videotaped then distributed on Russian nationalist websites.

An outcry from human rights groups over these and similar attacks prompted the Kremlin to call for a review of Russian nationalist groups' links to hate crime.

The Kremlin had initially provided informal backing to some of these organisations as part of its drive to improve young people's interest in politics.

The Nationalist-Socialist Society was formally banned in February 2010 and several similar groups have since been forced to disband.

But they maintain a strong presence on Russian social media networks and often manage to bring out large numbers of supporters for protests outside foreign embassy in times of diplomatic tensions with the West.

Monday's hearing received national media attention and saw the group walk into court chanting neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic slogans and repeatedly jeering the judge from the dock.

One member of the gang wore a black t-shirt with a skull and bones while others wore surgical masks to hide their identities. Several had shaved heads.

Presiding judge Nikolai Tkachuk quickly read through the 250 page verdict before delivering his sentence and calling gang leader Lev Molotkov "an extraordinary danger to Russian society".

The father of one of the defendants broke down in tears after the verdict while the group chanted in unison: "Our conscience stands above the law."

The neo-Nazi leader had pleaded not guilty.

"We plan to appeal,'' defence attorney Maria Malakhovskayasaid.

"This ruling was simply not objective."

Her client -- a 21-year old unemployed man identified as one of the senior gang members -- received 20 years behind bars.

A recent spike in ethnic violence prompted the Russian authorities to crack down on neo-Nazi groups and ban some organisations that had operated in the open for years.

The rise in ethnic tension in Moscow and other major cities spilled over in December when a massive riot broke out near the Kremlin following the murder of a nationalist supporter of a Moscow football club by a Muslim suspect.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin later raised eyebrows by visiting the grave of the slain football fan in the company of several nationalist organisations that took part in December's rioting.

But both he and President Dmitry Medvedev have identified racism as one of the country's more pressing social concerns and chaired various meetings designed to address Russian xenophobia.

A MUSEUM featuring Hitler that allows visitors to dress up in Nazi uniforms and pose with swastika flags could open in Ukraine.

The city of Vinnitsa is hoping to turn the Wehrwolf bunker - where Hitler stayed during WWII - into a tourist attraction, the BBC reports.

The museum had been due to open in May to coincide with the commemoration of victory over the Nazis.

Kateryna Vysotska, who works at the Vinnitsa Museum, said the bunker would also serve as a memorial for victims.

However, communist and socialist party activists fear it could become a magnet for neo-Nazis.

Lydia Zakusylova, who chairs the regional Communist Party, told the BBC a road sign pointing to the location of the Wehrwolf already has neo-Nazis flocking to the site.

Ms Zakusylova said initially there were suggestions to restore wartime dug-outs for PoWs, but then she was told about plans to exhibit uniforms and flags of the officers and men of the Reich.

"They wanted to offer tourists the chance to try on uniforms, hang sub machine-guns around their necks and pose for pictures with Nazi flags in the background. This is blatant Nazi propaganda," she told the BBC.

The 10,000 PoWs and local civilians who are believed to have built the bunker were allegedly shot by the Nazis and buried there.

Local villagers, including children, were enlisted to dig trenches and clear out the woods.

Ms Vysotska said she met with veterans and told them that the bunker has become a tourist attraction irrespective of their wishes.

"Visitors will keep coming and it would be better if our museum staff conduct proper guided tours," she said.

In April, 2010, a museum celebrating Nazi Germany's SS opened at its former leader's headquarters in Wewelsburg Castle in Paderborn, Germany.

The $10.7 million tourist attraction also sparked fears it will lead to far right neo-fascist pilgrimages.

GUNMAN: Law enforcement sources confirmed that white supremacist James W Von Brunn was involved in a shooting at the US Holocaust Museum.

A security guard at the United States Holocaust Museum has died after being shot by a gunman who has been identified by US media as a neo-Nazi.

Several blocks of Washington DC were put into lockdown on Wednesday after the gunman entered the museum about 1pm local time (5am NZT Thursday) and opened fire with a rifle.

Security guards returned fire as terrified visitors cowered in galleries and on the floor.

The gunman remains in critical condition in George Washington Hospital.

'Lone gunman'

At first, visitors were told by the guards to get down and take cover, but as soon as it was clear the gunman was alone, visitors were ordered to run out the back door.

One eyewitness, Maria, 19, said the shooting took place in the lobby on the second floor and began with a shot.

"A guard shot toward the security area. There was another security guard and he was face down and had blood on his back - there was a lot of blood, " she said.

VICTIM: Stephen Tyrone Johns was shot and killed at the US Holocaust Museum.

Sergeant David Schlosser, spokesman for the US Park Police, said it was believed that two security guards returned fire.

Authorities identified the dead security guard as Stephen Tyrone Johns.

Fox News, NBC and CNN said the gunman had been identified as James von Brunn, 88, a neo-Nazi from Maryland who is tied to hate groups and anti-government organisations, and served a prison sentence for taking a gun into the Federal Reserve.

Neither Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty nor the city's police chief Cathy Lanier would confirm the gunman's identity.

"It appears to be a lone gunman who entered into the museum and opened fire with what appears to be a rifle at this point," said Lanier. "We have no confirmation on any identity. That's going to take a little bit of time."

She added that there had been no prior warning about the incident.

President Obama 'shocked'

US President Barack Obama said he was shocked by the shooting.

He called it an "outrageous act'' and said it "reminds us that we must remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and prejudice in all its forms.''

Obama said the shooting would not diminish the United States' effort to build a more peaceful and tolerant world. He said no US institution was more important to those efforts than the museum.

The president also said his thoughts and prayers were with the friends and family of a security guard who was fatally wounded in the shooting.

The blogosphere lit up after the shooting, with some decrying the violence while right-wing and neo-Nazi websites were full of praise and adoration for von Brunn.

"This is a great story,'' read one post.

Former defence secretary William Cohen said he was standing outside with a museum official when the gunman entered, apparently from a red vehicle left parked in the street.

"When the shots rang out, we just ducked down and scattered,'' he said. "So we ran up the stairs. We didn't know how many shooters were there, how many shots were going to continue, how many people were involved.''

"People panicked and wanted to evacuate the building. I said 'don't go down','' said Cohen, who was at the museum because a play written by his wife Janet Langhart Cohen was to be staged there on Wednesday evening.

Angela Andelson, 22, visiting from San Francisco, was walking toward the exit of the museum when she heard a loud bang "like someone had dropped something''.

"So I kind of turned to look,'' she said. "And I see all these security guards kind of like ducking. I kind of glanced again and saw a gunman coming in (carrying) a long looking kind of gun.

"I just ran in to one of the exhibits to try to take cover,'' she said.

All around her, she said: "People were screaming and ducking down, getting on the floor, getting under benches.''

Another witness, Maria Hernandez, was with her grandparents walking through the haunting exhibits which chronicle the Holocaust and the genocide of six million Jews under the Nazis.

"We were in the exhibit 'Remember the Children' and we heard rounds fired and through the glass doors I saw a security guard firing towards the shooter and a man on his belly on the floor and when I looked back again, we were heading toward the exit, I saw blood all over the floor,'' she said.

"He was hit real bad.''

White supremacist

Von Brunn is known as a committed white supremacist and hardened Holocaust denier whose writings revealed long-simmering resentments against Jews and minorities.

He railed in a recent blog posting that "America is a Third-World racial garbage-dump - stupid, ignorant, dead-broke, and terminal.''

He has written a books on the Holocaust, Adolf Hitler, and his view on white superiority including "Tob Shebbe Goyim Harog,'' which his website calls "the culmination of his life's work''.

He served during World War II as a PT boat captain and is a decorated veteran of that war, according to a biography posted on his website holywesternempire.org.

Prior to Wednesday's attack on the Holocaust Museum, he attempted in 1981, according to his website "to place the treasonous Federal Reserve Board ... under legal, non-violent, citizens' arrest".

He was convicted to time in a federal prison, serving a total of six-and-a-half years, according to website.

Another internet site selling artwork credited to von Brunn in its biographical details described him as the son of a steel mill worker, who was born in the city of Saint Louis, Missouri. His family immigrated to the United States from Germany and Austria around 1845.

Trained as a journalist, von Brunn describes himself as a professional writer and painter and gives his current residence as the town of Easton on Maryland's eastern shore.

Heidi Beirich of the Southern Poverty Law centre, which monitors hate groups, described von Brunn as "a very well-known neo-Nazi," with a long track record of anti-Semitism and racist hate speak.
