....2 Work......2 Quit Or Not To Quit - That Is The ??? ....

............I think I'm going to quit my job....

...Here are the reasons....

(1) Got pulled aside by my immediate boss who had been directed by HER immediate boss (Our CFO) to inform me that I had not been doing enough overtime.

Now...... we work a 7.6 hour day - not counting 30 mins for lunch - I am usually in by about 720am and usually leave somewhere between 430 & 5pm.. Do the math.

Also, we don't get paid overtime or time off in lieu............ quandary time.......

(2) We are so insanely busy that when you are off sick - like I am today - you almost are made to feel guilty that you took the time off...........

(3) It took me 4 months of requesting - to get one week of holiday leave approved for mid October....

(4) The 20 year old who sits next to me and is good friends with my boss and BFF's with her son gets away with MURDER... even though *I* got saddled with 30% of his workload.

(5) CFO - he is stuck in the mid fifties with leave it to beaver - he works 10 hour days - but he is also earning 3 times what I make but expects me to be there 10 hours per day....

Here is why I am pondering and not str8 out quitting...

I like the place........... the rest of the team are good people............ I actually enjoy the work (Finance Officer - detailed and responsible shit)........... and its only 15 mins drive from home....

The thing is - I am actually stressing going back into the office. Ive been off sick for 2 days with a chest infection. Serious stuff if you are a chronic asthmatic. And yet RETURNING to work has me stressing........ and I was off for a VALID reason.

Oy vey.......... thoughts?

Shalom

That is a hard one! You just need to figure out what is most important. One of the main reasons I stay at the job I have is because no matter how shitty the boss can be sometimes..I relly LOVE what I do there!

That is the hard issue QH - I do like what I do and the people (With two exceptions) are really good.

*sigh* lol

Life does like to throw us little curve balls doesnt it.

sleep on it and ask yourself if this is what you want.

No professionals get paid overtime here in the US. Do they there?

It took you so long to find this job and in the past you have said that you loved it and your coworkers. Has that changed?

At my jobs here in the US, some overtime was expected. I would routinely work at least an hour over an 8 hour day and that was expected. I loved my job and thought nothing of it.

I never compared what did to what others [slackers] did. That is low and not worth my contempt. I just kept my nose to the grindstone and took the highroad.

If you work as I did, no one will look without favor on your sick leave.

I worked towards a promotion and got many. I'm sorry, but you sound lazy! Clock watching! 7.6 hours! What is ".6" hour? How many minutes is that?

I think you need a fresh look at this job and what it means to you Damien. The job market is very tight right now and from where I stand you are lucky to have one at all.

time to be interviewing. It better to retain your control then let it slide and HAVE to get another job or worse get stuck in a hole.

hang in there. the economy isn't looking very rosy at the moment. I think part and parcel of an accounting job is overtime.

Not enough O/T and you don't get anything for it? Is that legal?

Tough call. I'm not familiar w/ what you mean by OT since I assume you are salaried and not paid hourly. I like what I do and finished working today around 8PM - its a busy time of year for me. Longer work days have never really bothered me, but feeling like I'm being treated unfairly gets under my skin and is tough to shake.

I'm not sure what to tell you or if you were venting and not really looking for suggestions. I'd never tell someone to stay some place they don't like or quit a place because of long hours - that's a personal decision. Think about what makes sense for you.

All of your comments have given me a lot to think about.

Sue - I don't now whether to thank you or bark at you for that slap.

I was in a mood. I surprised even myself. I apologize for calling you lazy. But really, what is a .6 of an hour??? I understand that you work very hard and that is good. Maybe examine when and why you lose that focus. You could probably continue to work at that hyper productive level for a good time longer than the usual day, and really please the bosses. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

Damien, I'm glad you are thinking on this and not making any rash decisions, that's probably the key to finding a good answer. It seems like you have many things about your current job you like, but a few people that you don't like at all. They happen to be too close for comfort. I think the question you really want to know the answer to is how long can you stand their pressuring and inane expectations. Start looking for a new job, get your resume updated, and start to network more while you figure that out.

Employers know what the job market is out there and this is why shit like this is happening to not only you but everyone else out there struggling too. This is why unions were formed. To protect workers from thes kinds of inequities and conditions. The last job I had was unionized and I was constantly calling on my union for help and was deemed a trouble maker by management. I'm so glad I'm out of the work force now and disabled.
I don't know what to tell you but if I were you I'd hang in there since you do like the place. Nothing is ever perfect.
