Are Blogs Dying A Slow Death?
It was at the suggestion of my wonderful "Bubb" who impressed upon me the need for an outlet both for my intellect and my creativity. Plus, I secretly think he was hoping if I was writing about stuff, then I wouldn't be constantly bombarding him with it ;-)
When my blog first started, I was averaging 50 readers a day. That was all due to the lovely Brenton over at Aussielicious (link in sidebar) who was gracious enough to promote my (then) new blog.
At it's height, due to advertising and cross linking with other blogs, I was averaging approximately 1500 readers a day.
Now, I average 400-500 a day.
Now, I am not an attention whore. (No - really I am not). Yes I am codependent and needy, but that's just with Bubb. And my blog has never been about a means for external gratification or validation, because the blog has been and always will be an outlet for things of MY interest, not others. It is an expression of me after all.
So I have to ask. Where has everyone gone?
Is it Twitter? Is it Snapchat? Are personal blogs just passé now? Are the only truly trafficked blogs the ones with up to date LGBTQ news; lots of porn; political analysis; and/or celebrity gossip and happenings?
I am keeping this intentionally short because I would like to hear what OTHERS think. ESPECIALLY MY BLOGGER FRIENDS. Sorry for the caps - but I don't want them to miss out on this one.
So let's get this conversation started.
Thanks all.
Oh - and whilst the blog is primarily about me and my interests, I want you all to know that if only 5 of you visit for the rest of the blogs life - and it will be here for a long time - I appreciate each and every one of you. I love doing this.
Shalom and blessing to all.

2 Profile - A Marine.....
Mon Plaisir -- That's French.
(2CW) Firstly, before anything else, for the benefit of our non-US readers - including myself :) - can you tell us how the Marine Corps is placed within the Armed Forces of the USA?
The Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy (although we all hate to admit to that little fact) and was originally formed in 1775 as a battalion of naval infantry and to provide security on Navy ships.
(2CW) What are the ranks of the Corps?
The enlisted ranks are private, private first class, lance corporal, corporal, sergeant, staff sergeant, gunnery sergeant, first sergeant/master sergeant, sergeant major/master gunnery sergeant.
And the officer ranks are 2nd lieutenant, 1st lieutenant, captain, major, Lt. colonel, colonel, brigadier general, major general, Lt. general, general.
There's also a weird grade of officer known as warrant officers that fall between the enlisted ranks and the officer ranks. In the Marines we call them "Gunners".
(2CW) I've heard the term "Semper Fi" before on tv and in the movies of course - but what is it and more importantly what does it mean to a Marine?
It's who and what we are -- Always Faithful.
I went into the Corps in July of 1979 because I was about to be tossed out of college -- discipline problem dontcha know -- and went into the Marines because they had the prettiest uniforms. That and because I wanted to blow shit up.
(2CW) Your initial period of training - is it Boot Camp? - and what sort of experience was it for you?
Boot camp was great. Stressful and physically demanding but an excellent overall experience. Plus, it makes you a Marine, so there's that.
Boot camp generally attrits only about 15% or so of each platoon. The Corps relies upon more advanced training later on to really weed people out.
(2CW) Is it true that you are basically "reprogrammed" during your initial training?
Absolutely. You need to be broken of all the ways in which you previously comported yourself when you were a slovenly civilian and learn how to function as a unit in a manner consistent with the mission of the Marine Corps.
(2CW) I have often heard Marines referred to as "The nicest, most polite bunch of psychopaths one could hope to meet". Now, this gives me a giggle, but given the training and the fundamental job of a Marine - to go in and fuck the other sides shit up with bombs and guns - is it FAR off the mark?
Its spot on really. Although Eleanor Roosevelt once said of Marines she met during World War II, “The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!”
All true, but we are polite to a fault.
I was on active duty for just over 4 years and in the reserves for 6 years. I was a Sergeant of Marines and I was trained as a combat infantryman and scout-sniper.
(2CW) What were some of the positive aspects of your service?
Getting to blow shit up, duh!
(2CW) What were some of the difficult aspects of your service - and please feel free to pass on this question.
Dealing with abjectly stupid people who held a higher rank than me and whom, when they issued a stupid order, could not be convinced of its stupidity.
Also, being a big homo in an organization like the Marines in the late 70s and early 80s. That was a challenge.
(2CW) One question I do have is with regards to the role of the Sniper. To me, if put in this position, with my current psychology, I would find this an extremely difficult thing to do. Yes, we bomb our enemies, we send in missiles, tanks etc, and that I could probably do. Fighting from a distance may be an axiom that shows a level of cowardice on my part, but I can actually understand that type of combat. And yet, thinking of the Sniper, it would seem to me to be a very PERSONAL type of kill. Is it a different head-space, a different psychology / mind-set one must put themselves in? Or is it just a matter of "This guy in my scope has killed / will kill / wants to kill, therefore I have to kill him first." ?
Its incredibly personal and I think that's part of the point of it. The sniper not only kills a target, but in so doing causes terror among those who are nearby and witness what we refer to as "the pink mist" after a good head shot.
(2CW) I once heard someone say in a blog post "Once a Marine - always a Marine". Can you expand on this? Do Marines every actually "retire" as such? Or do you become a Marine in the Burbs :) ?
Actually, by order of the Commandant of the Marine Corps, every Marine who ever served and was honorably discharged or retired is still considered a Marine. There are no ex-Marines or former Marines, there are just Marines.
(2CW) Another phrase I've heard is that the Corps are often referred to as "The Fighting Faggots"... now you HAVE to expand on that one for us all please.
That's an Army slur that in my personal experience is totally true. The Marines appeal to a lot of gay men. Think about it -- if you're a 17 or 18 year old kid who has questions about how you feel sexually, and maybe you've been picked on and you've got something to prove the military is an obvious outlet. Then, pair all that with the fact that the Marines have the best uniforms of all the branches of the military and a justifiable reputation for being an elite fighting force and you've got a place ready made for the young gay boy.
(2CW) How common is male to male contact in the Corps and is viewed as a Gay thing or a Guy / Marine thing?
Its fairly common. Most Marines are fairly circumspect about how they go about it but its a lot more common than many homophobes would like to believe. I never ever had a hard time getting laid while I was in the Marines.
(2CW) There is a tale of a Marine Squad Leader (? right term ?) out on shore leave with is squad in a gay bar when the MP's come in and his squad come to his defence. On a personal level - I would design build and use a time machine to take me to this spot JUST to see this. Given the attitudes and Code of Military Justice at the time, this was one BALLSY action for those boys to take yes?
My platoon knew I was gay and was ferociously protective of me. Always making sure I never got myself into a situation that could result in problems.
(2CW) Now I am officially out of questions - my own lack of knowledge about the Corps has me spent - but I would very much like you to add whatever you would like to at this point.
Support your local Marine!
(2CW) Now why didn't *I* think of that :)- Support your local Marine/s!
(2CW) Thank you so much for you time and more importantly thank you for your service. You and your brother Marines in the Corps do something many of us / I could never do.
It has been an honour and a privilege to be allowed this glimpse into your time in the Corps and the Corps itself. Shalom and blessings on you and all service men and women everywhere...
My pleasure Damien.

.....2 Profile..... He's A Wonder...........Wonder Man !! ...
Today on the blog we are profiling one of my favourite bloggers - Viktor aka Wonder Man from "Maybe It's Just Me!"
I have been reading WM's blog for a long time and am a great admirer of his. We are also kindred spirits who have a love for comics and a "healthy" obsession with all things Wonder Woman :)
So sit back - grab a cupp - and scroll through this a snapshot of this very interesting young man.
(2CW) Firstly, welcome to the blog Viktor - it is an absolute pleasure to have you here.
Glad to be here

(2CW) Now let's get straight to the important issues - WTF were they thinking with the recent Wonder Woman reboot? Was it drugs? Alien infiltration? Mind Control? Sheer stupidity? A Wonder Woman who KILLS people and wears a shitty outfit that looks like it was off the rack at Wal-Mart???
I think they wanted to try something new with Diana, but it was a bad idea. She 70 years old, she has a history and they were screwing it up. It was a good thing to cancel it.

(2CW) How long have you been a fan of WW and when did you first realise that "Tin Tit's" (as I call her) had you in her spell?
The Spin. The TV show gave us the best transformation ever. It was then, I was hooked.

(2CW) How did you get started in blogging and when did you start? Was there one particular 'A-Ha!' moment, or did the interest come from knowing other bloggers?
I thought it would be a fun thing to do. I'm a creative person, so I needed to make a outlet to use my abilities.

(2CW) What is it that you get out of blogging?
meeting new people and hearing their opinions
(2CW) One of the things that I enjoy is the window into Black Culture. Now, before I go any further let me say that I am at at NO time attempting to be offensive or ignorant, I am coming from a place of little to no knowledge about this topic and am genuinely curious. I'm a white boy aussie jew seeking revelation on a cultural group only presented to me by movies and TV.
So first question - Why is being gay such a taboo in the Black community? It seems to be even more of a no-no than in even the Jewish community.
A lot has to do with religion. Christianity has a scary hold on our community and many of them believe the Bible word for word
(2CW) When you came out to your family - how did they react and what was that process like?
Actually, mom told me over the phone. She realized that I wasn't into girls and told me to just come on out. So I did, and the rest of the family just fell in line. Since then, 3 other family members have came out.
(2CW) Not a question - just an observation - your mother seems adorable, and is extremely pretty with legs to die for :)
Thanks, she would great appreciate that

(2CW) Have you experienced racism in the gay community?
Yes, in Arizona. I was told that "colored guys were meant to serve". That was a shock to hear and a shock when he was popped in the mouth by my friend.
(2CW) Have you ever received poor treatment for dating outside your community (if you have dated outside your community)?
I have dated outside my race and I don't get any flack for it. But some guys wish I would leave my guy for them.
(2CW) From what I understand, the Blacks dislike of dating outside the community seems to be a more broader issue with both hetero and same sex couples. Why is that?
It's not all of us that feel that way. But some feels like it's a act of betrayal. It is a deep issue and sometimes multi-layered issue, so it's hard to explain with a few lines

(2CW) The Black community has been said to be carrying a chip on it's shoulder. Commentators - some Black - have often said that their needs to be a "letting go" of it in the Black community, and that there is even a strong current of reverse racism. Your thoughts?
With years of racism and social problems besetting our community, it's hard for some of us to move on. We are always reminded that we are different than most people. So it's hard to take that chip off.
(2CW) Why is the "gangsta" mentality so taken up by young black men? To me admittedly sitting here in Australia - it seems SO silly and SUCH a waste of money and time and indeed at time lives. Why is it so attractive for them to act and sound like a thug?
It's a sign of masculinity. It's a stupid sign, but many guys feel it gives them a stronger identity

(2CW) Back to comics - I see that DC is relaunching it's primary characters much like it did back with the 'Crisis On Infinite Earths' - have you seen/read the relaunched WW? How have they treated her?
I'm waiting to see more of the story, but so far, I'm not pleased.
(2CW) Now the 2 Cents Worth survey......

.........2 Cents Profile.................. Adam from The Healthy Boy..........
.......................Today on 2 Cents Worth Down Under we have Adam Reynolds form The Healthy Boy - a blog devoted to nutrition and good health and one of my new must reads. Adam's site http://www.thehealthyboy.com/ is a fantastic site that has excellent information, tips and advice regarding nutrition, weight loss, working out, and general health and well-being.
And he's Australian - which is always nice on this blog :)
So please welcome Adam to the blog and surf on over and check out his site with all it's sensible, timely and healthy advice.
(2CW) Welcome to 2 Cents Worth Down Under Adam and thanks for agreeing to do the profile.
Thank you Damien. So happy you are enjoying reading my blog.
(2CW) So how did you get interested in nutrition/good health, and how did an Aussie lad like yourself end up in the USofA working in Nutrition?
I wasn’t always interested in health and nutrition. I used to have no muscle tone, ate terribly, and had a spare tire around my waist. One day I read a book which changed the way I eat and look at food, and joined a gym and never looked back.
I moved from Sydney to New York three years ago to study and pursue my career in acting. When I completed my studies at acting school a year ago, I headed over to Los Angeles where I signed with an agent and started doing what so many other young Aussie actors do, audition, audition, audition.
(2CW) How did The Healthy Boy get started?
Well after about 6 months of auditioning and spending my days submitting for casting after casting, I quickly realized that I needed do something outside of acting to keep myself occupied and not go insane, so I decided to do something with my next big passion – nutrition and fitness.
I started working as a research assistant for a celebrity nutritionist and started writing a blog. Mainly for my own personal use at first, but it quickly grew into something much larger than that.
I started blogging about things I found interesting and wrote articles about topics I thought the general public weren’t aware of, whether it was the fact that those “healthy” pinkberrys my friends were eating actually had more sugar than two cans of coca cola, or mistakes that people seemed to be making in the gym.
Now I’m not a personal trainer, nor am I a nutritionist, but I research topics I find interesting and ones I believe my readers will benefit from.
(2CW) Has it been well received? Do you have contributors to the blog that you work with?
It has been very well received. First my friends and family started reading it and found my articles eye opening and recommended it to their friends, Queerty heard about it and picked up my articles for a regular column on their site, and other blogs and websites have started recommending it to their readers. I’ve been voted a Best health Blogger from Wellsphere, my site has been voted as a Best Health Blog, and I have numerous companies and organizations contacting me daily to advertise and promote their products to my readers.
I’m not a personal trainer, so I do reply on some article contributions from two of my “gurus” – Tom Venuto and Mike Geary. Both are authors of best selling fitness books (Tom’s was the one that changed my life al those years ago back in Sydney), both are certified personal trainers, and they both write articles that my readers find beneficial.
(2CW) What are some of the mistakes people make with their nutrition? &, What are some of the simple, easy to adopt tactics for healthy living? Or is that too loaded a question :) ?
LOL no it’s not too loaded. You know, I think you hit the nail right on the head when you said “mistake”. You see I’m not necessarily writing for people who are extremely obese, or people who want to get really big at the gym. A lot of my readers are the average person who maybe has a little bit of weight they would like to lose, or a would like to gain a little more muscle. A lot of these people think they are eating healthy or performing the right routines at the gym, but actually aren’t and therefore aren’t seeing the results they want to see.
I recently wrote an article about Vitamin Water for example. Healthy individuals are drinking these believing they are doing themselves good, but if you drink one of these a day, it’s the equivalent sugar wise of eating 10 krispy kremes in a week! Not to mention it could cause you 13 pounds of weight gain over a year. Most people just don’t know this. These are the types of articles I write because I too find them interesting and eye opening and my readers love them.
Knowledge is power, and it’s the best tactic for healthy living. Do your research, turn over and read the nutritional labels, and you are well on your way to a better life. Avoid fried foods, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and only eat whole foods.
(2CW) I lived in Orlando, Florida from 2002 - 2004 and traveled throughout the USA and one thing I was stunned by was the saturation of fast food outlets EVERYWHERE and how almost ridiculously cheap the food was. In contrast, the fresh food in many of the food markets were of poor quality, expensive, and certainly not what I was used to in Australia. It almost seems American culture is geared AWAY from good health.
Urgh, don’t even get me started on this. My blood starts to boil when I think about it. The fact is that so things are very backward in the world at the moment, whether we are talking about America or any other country for that matter. One of the things that is backward, and one of the reasons why obesity is an epidemic, and why children have a lesser life expectancy and higher risk of diabetes, is because fast food is so cheap and healthy food isn’t.
Fast food is so accessible and marketed so effectively that many people don’t know any better. People and families literally grow up eating the stuff and pass on these bad eating habits to their children who don’t stand a chance.
Time are also tough, and people need to stretch their hard earned money as far as possible. I mean if you have a family to feed and only $5 to do it, would you go to a fast food place where you can get a whole heap of food off these $1 menus, or would you head to Wholefoods and pay $5 for one head of broccoli?
I think things are slowly changing though. There are so many shows on TV these days aimed at educating people about health and fitness, losing weight and eating right, and even the First Lady Michelle Obama is pushing education for children to combat childhood obesity. There is still a long way to go though.
How do we change it? Well we as consumers have an incredible amount of power when to comes to choice. If we stop eating at fast food restaurants, and start buying more clean wholesome produce from our local grocery stores, then the prices for these items will start to reflect that and we will see those foods becoming more affordable.
(2CW) Did you find the fast food culture of the USA tempting when you moved there?
Not really. I used to allow myself a “cheat meal” once a week a couple of years ago where I would eat healthy all week and then once a week, normally on a Sunday, I would allow myself to “cheat” by eating junk food. I would normally head to McDonalds for some chicken nuggets and French Fries – a childhood favorite of mine.
But my focus has changed in recent years. For me it’s no longer about fat loss and muscle building, but about what I put into my body. I don’t eat packaged foods, bad fats or a lot of sugar. I avoid any foods that have any artificial chemicals or additives (fast foods are loaded with these), so I don’t eat them at all anymore, cheat day or not. I couldn’t even tell you the last time I walked into a fast food restaurant.
I also watched a movie “Food Inc” recently, which changed the way I look at, buy, and consume meat products. Now I’m a huge carnivore, I eat chicken like its going out of fashion and If someone told me I had to go vegetarian tomorrow I would probably have a heart attack, but this movie taught me how to look for and buy animal products that have been raised ethically and without hormones or antibiotics. Unfortunately most fast food restaurants use meat products that are heavily contaminated.
(2CW) The thing that many people comment on, and something I certainly know is true, is that fast food can taste SO damn good. It isn't always easy to give up the good taste.
You know what? It actually doesn’t taste better than healthy food. It’s just that people’s taste buds have become accustomed to eating large amounts of salt, sugar and fat which make up the majority of fast food. Once you start eating healthy, nutritious food and cooking things for yourself from fresh ingredients, you will never go back to fast food again.
But our taste buds and bodies are literally addicted to salt, sugar and fat. They are like drugs. Sure they make you feel good, but they are incredibly bad for you. It takes a lot to stop eating them.
Another thing to consider is how do you REALLY feel after you eat these foods. People say they taste good, but how do you feel 10 minutes or half an hour after eating them? You feel bloated, you feel lethargic, and feel guilty for eating it. Is it really worth it?
(2CW) In contrast many people say that good food doesn't always taste good. What piece of the puzzle are we missing when it comes to replacing the good taste of bad food with a healthy but tasty alternative? Do we just not know how to cook anymore???
I think people who say this simply don’t know how to buy or prepare healthy food For example when most people make soup they add a ton of salt and cream thinking they need it to taste good. I have an incredible butternut squash soup recipe that is made only from fresh vegetables and has no salt, fat, sugar or cream added to it that would knock your socks off.
(2CW) You identify as an ex-chocoholic. Does that mean you NEVER have a piece? If not, what did you replace it with?
LOL yes I am an ex-chocoholic. More so than that I am just an ex-junk food guy. I had a huge sugar addiction. I would eat a dozen candy bars in one sitting, half a cake in a matter of minutes, and a whole tub of ice cream in one night. Once I started I couldn’t stop. But yeah, chocolate in particular was my weakness.
It took a lot for me to stop bingeing on these foods but I did it. When I got to the weekend where I would normally pig out, I said to myself “Ok, you can eat as much food as you want, it just needs to be healthy”. So I didn’t diet, or deprive myself, I stuffed myself with healthy food (ones that I enjoyed eating of course like healthy sandwiches) until I was full and satisfied. I ended up losing a ton of weight and didn’t even think about chocolate.
I don’t really eat it all that much anymore. I will have the occasional treat or some cake at a birthday party for example or desert at a group dinner, but I just make sure it’s a small portion. I’m not one of those people who can a little bit per day and be ok, once I start, I can’t stop. So I’ve found only eating it occasionally works best for me.
You also need to enjoy what you eat, otherwise you wont stick to it or you will just be miserable. So it’s a matter of each person deciding what healthy foods and meals they really enjoy, and making them often so to reward themselves.
(2CW) Many people know the benefits from healthy eating but would argue that healthy eating is time consuming and they are simply too busy. People are working longer hours and find it harder to balance a career, friends and fitness.
You know what? It is time consuming and it is hard. But getting diabetes is harder. Taking medication every day for the rest of your life is harder. Spending money on expensive health bills is harder. Not seeing your children grow up is harder. Being unhappy with yourself and your life is harder…you get the point.
But like anything you can find tricks to making your healthy eating life easier. Buy read made salad mixes from the supermarket. Have a stash of almonds in your draw at work for snacks. Prepare you meals on the weekends in advance and refrigerate them or freeze them. If you live life on the go, it’s no excuse not to eat healthy, most to go cafes, food stands, and even fast food restaurants, do have healthier options such as wholewheat sandwiches, salads and lean protein options.
(2CW) Here are some 2 Cents quickies.............
Favourite Food............... eggs…any which way. Love em.
Favourite Drink ........... Green tea. Obessed with it. Drink it 5 times a day and get excited when I find a new version I haven’t tried (I know, I need a life)
Favourite Guilty Pleasure............Just one? Definitely Chocolate.
Where would you go for dinner with someone on a first date?................ Somewhere quiet and romantic with low lighting and a clear exit for a quick getaway.
What is a fast food that you used to LOVE to eat?.............................Chicken McNuggets with Sweet and Sour Sauce.
What is a healthy food that you absolutely can not bring yourself to eat? .............. I HATE tart yogurt. I just can’t stand the sour taste. Blah.
Would you date someone who doesn't share your attitude towards health?............. LOL it would depend on how much they didn’t share it. It would depend on the person, but I think a good attitude toward health is important whether I’m dating them or not.
(2CW) Adam, thanks so much for joining us here on the blog, and I hope you will be open to come back for a Part 2.
Thanks for having me. Would love to come back.
Now, you've read the profile - head over to The Health Boy and appreciate the quality and quantity of great information that is over there.

..............................Blog Spotlight........................................
I could do a blurb on this fantastic blog but Scott over at Bill In Exile does it FAR more eloquently than me.
One of my favorite blogs in the whole wide world is Bourgeois Nerd run by one of my most all-time favorite bloggers — Frank.
I’ve mentioned before that Frank and I started our respective blogs at about the same time, and how over the years we’ve actually become close personal friends. Frank is a great guy who is smart as a whip with a funny sense of humor.
Oh, and he’s a total book nerd so there’s that to love about him as well.
But here’s the thing, as long as I’ve known Frank his blog has only gotten about 80 or 90 visitors a day. And this is a blog that really deserves to get a shit load of visitors every day with an ever growing readership.
But every time I check his site meter {because Frank isn’t a fucking pussy like all you bloggers who make your site meters private because you don’t want people to know what shitty traffic you get} his blog has been stuck at the same 80 or 90 visitors. And we’re talking 80 or 90 visitors for the last five fucking years!
Frank posts pics of hot menz just like I do here {and frankly, some of his pics are much hotter than what I post} and he also puts up some truly idiosyncratic literary posts that can be totally fucking hysterical and that you won’t find the likes of anywhere on the Tubes, as well as his own unique {and I do mean UNIQUE} take on the world.
Seriously, if you quote me on this I’ll call you a liar, but so much of Bill in Exile’s links section is total, unadulterated bullshit. Especially the Fellow Inmates section. Many of the blogs listed there I never read, nor will I ever read them. Because they’re total fucking crap. But because they asked me nicely to link to them I did.
There! I said it. So sue me. Its my dirty little secret.
But Frank’s blog isn’t crap. In fact, it’s just the opposite of crap.
Its the little nugget of solid gold that you find IN the crap if you just take the time to search for it.
So this is what I’d like you to do — go visit his blog. And do it regularly! Every day. A couple times a day even.
Because if you do I guaranfuckingtee you’ll find all sorts of shit to love about it, and then you’ll love Frank like I do and then you’ll want to check in with him all the time just to see whats up like I do.
Frank didn’t ask me to do this — and he’ll probably be annoyed that I did — but my mission is to permanently increase Frank’s daily traffic into the triple digits and I can’t do it without your help.
So help a brother out and bookmark Bourgeois Nerd and make it a daily go-to on your blogging to-do list.
Because if the Bill in Exile readers aren’t capable of rallying around the flag, then nobody is.So do what Scott says and go visit and say hi.
It is well worth it - really ......... it is.
